Bennetts has been trading in Grimsby since the early nineteenth century.

At that time Grimsby was a small fishing community situated by the mouth of the River Humber in the north eastern corner of Lincolnshire. During the 19th Century Grimsby grew rapidly with the development of the docks and the arrival of the railway.

I need C16 or C24 graded timber, what is it and do you stock it?

Timber must be graded if it is to be used in internal structural applications as stipulated by building regulations. Timber is graded to either C16 or C24. Here all the structural properties of the timber are quantified. Eg Species, Knot Size and Type, Slope of Grain, Tightness of grain, Compression Wood, Rot etc. C24 grade can only be achieved by imported timber. Homegrown timber from UK sawmills will make C16 only and so will have reduced span capability. At Bennetts Timber we stock C24 regularised timbers.

I've heard of Scandinavian 5ths - what does this mean?

Scandanavian 5ths (Vths) is a standard grade of joinery timber, more of a multipurpose grade which has a large variety of uses typically for flooring, skirting and architrave. Most PSE and mouldings are machined from 5th grade.

Other grades such as 'saw falling' and 6th grade are available too. The lower grades tend to have larger knots and some defects.

    What does 'finished size' mean

This is the actual finished size that your timber will come in. For example 47mm x 100mm C24 graded regularised timber has a finished size of 45mm x 95mm and that is the actual size it will come in, always look for the finished size rather than the nominal size.

    What does 'nominal' mean?

Nominal size is the actual size of timber that the board is machined out of, in other words the finished product will have a smaller finished size than the nominal size. For example 47mm x 100mm C24 regularised graded is the nominal size, the finished size is 45mm x 95mm or thereabouts.

    What does 'unsorted' mean?

'Unsorted' is the premium grade or best quality joinery timber where the lower grades have been removed, or sorted. Unsorted joinery is mainly used where a visible finish is important, such as doors, windows, stairs, skirtings and architraves. Unsorted has a low knot content, straight grain and smooth finish.

    What does CLS mean?

CLS stands for 'Canadian Lumber Standard'. CLS was originally manfactured in Canada for use in the building of timber framed houses, hence its name. Over the past few years CLS has become increasingly popular in the UK for use as framing for stud walls and internal partitions as it is relatively cheap and easy to use with regularised or curved edges. The UK version is usually manufactured from European or Scandanavian softwoods and is graded to C16.

    What does PTGV'd mean?

PTGV stands for planed tongue and grooved with a V joint. It may also be referred to as PMV which means Planed Machined with a V joint. Two different terms for the same thing! Oyr matchboarding is usually machined to PTGV, whereas floorboards are PTG.

    What is a Trade Account?

We have two types of Trade Accounts:

    • Trade Cash Account.
    • Trade Credit Account.

To apply for a credit account we will need to undertake all the relevant credit checks.

The payment terms for the credit account is 30 days.

You can use your Trade Account pricing in our Brigg and Grimsby Branches.

All invoices and statements for both types of accounts can be received by email.

    What is OSB?

OSB stands for oriented strand board. This is a widely used engineered wood board made using crossed layers of wood strands or flakes which are then compressed with adhesives to form a strong board. OSB can be used in many situations, particularly in flooring or roofing. It offers a cheaper alternative to plywood.

    What is PMV or PTGV?

PMV stands for planed and machined with a V joint. It may also be referred to as PTGV'd which means planed tongue and grooved with a V joint. Two different terms for the same thing! Our matchboarding is usually machined to PTGV, whereas floorboards are PTG.

    What is PSE?

PSE stands for Planed Square Edge. This is usually joinery timber (Scandanavian whitewood or redwood) that has been planed on all sides with square edges. In some parts of the UK this is referred to as PAR (Planed All Round).

    What is regularised?

Although the sawing process is a lot more accurate than it was some years ago, by regularising the timber the end user can be sure that in whatever application, each piece will have consistent and "regular' size. It is also more visually appealing as it usually has curved edges, rather than straight.
